If you've never heard of the Gorilla Biscuits before,
then you must lead a dull life, here's a rough background sketch, some
pictures, and a sound file, the sound quality isn't the greatest, but it's
still worth listening to.
The Gorilla Biscuits were one of many Straight-Edge
bands in New York. The scene there started out when Ray Cappo and Porcell
came down from Hartford, where they were college students, and started the
seminal band of the era, Youth of Today. Many bands began to immitate their
style and soon enough they all began to sound the same. The Positive Youth
Crew was in full effect, many of these hardcore straight-edge kids soon
became intolerant of any one without an X on their hand. Closed-minded and
often violent in their actions, their music bore little else. Then the
Gorilla Biscuits came forth and gave to the scene a new life in fast, tight,
stylized melodies, and lyrics devoid of the jock-brained superiority which
lives on (unfortunately all too obviously) in a considerable portion of
today's hardcore and straight-edge scenes.
So, these guys broke the mold from which all of their
contemporaries were seemingly cast. Laying out their message with open
arms, instead of closed minds. The Gorilla Biscuits rejected the ideas of
looking down on anyone who wasn't straight-edge (just listen to the song
"Better Than You" on New York Hardcore: The Wa It Is, a poignant
commentary if ever there was one). This belief in all-encompassing unity
and respect still shines through in their music, and is perhaps why they
have done so well to outlive the memory of many bands who were their
contemporaries. They are still pretty much worshipped throughout the east
coast. They released two full-length albums on Revelation Records , as
well as appearing on numerous compilations. They're easily one of the best
bands ever, and there are not enough sites on the web dedicated to them.
