You have your data today, will you still have it tomorrow ? Will you be the only one who has it ? Will it be the same data as it ever was, or will it have taken on some strange mysterious force ? Will you login tomorrow and discover that your e-mail has been abducted by creatures from outer space who have turned the messages into Rigulean? There are some simple things you can do ... [] Did you leave your diskettes in the car last night ? Bad idea. Diskettes are happy in normal temperatures, but are not at all adapted to Vermont's cold or Nevada's heat. Don't leave your disks out at night. [] Do you make regular backup copies of your important work ? A "backup" is a copy of your important work somewhere else; usually kept in a safe place. If you spill coffee or sprite on one disk, the other disk will be safe -- if it is out of range of the spill. [] Do you run anti-virus software on your PC ? You should use Network Associates Virus Toolkit Get it at ftp://ftp.uvm.edu/pub/antivirus/ [] Do you let friends use your account ? Another bad idea. Even good friends can accidentally erase e-mail, files, or change important configuration parameters. Worse, sometimes good friends turn bad. [] Do you have a secure password? If it's a word in a dictionary, if it's a common nickname or the name of your someone close to you, if it's written down in your notebook along with other important data, it's not secure ! And remember to change your password often, just for safety's sake. [] Do you know how to change your password? On a Unix system like zoo, you would use the "passwd" command. REMEMBER -- safe data is happy data. Keep your data happy, and you will be happy too !
