In the Regional editors forum, there is a thread discussing the races between all American states (and now Canadian and Australian provinces) for the most sites in their respective categories. However, states are of different in size of land area, population and economy, all characteristic which could affect the number of available sites. Below population has been used to get a better perspective of how many sites a state category actually has.
The following analysis attempts to compare the number of ODP sites in a Regional state category in relation to its population. The counts for the number of ODP sites in each Regional state category were taken at 18:24 PT, Monday, January, 8, 2001. The population data was taken from the U.S. Census Bureau, from the April 1, 2000 census. It is assumed that the population of a state is relatively static, in comparison to the ODP sites of a state. The results are done by dividing the state's population by the number of ODP sites. This gives a People per Site figure.
Well, actually I calculated the results by finding the number of people per ODP site for each state. I don't like decimals, and decided against using 1,000s of people. Thus the smaller number of people per ODP site, the more complete the category (theoretically).
